As promised, this is what I provide my clients after they receive natural hair color service. Another thing to think about not listed below is doing an Olaplex Treatment every 12 weeks or 3 months. This is not a protein treatment but a bond reconstructing treatment that rebuilds any broken bonds during the coloring process. Ask your stylist about this one. I make a point to do this through out the color process. Please know that the purpose of altering your regimen with colored natural hair is to ensure the following:
RECOMMENDED COLOR CARE FOR NATURAL HAIR BY EMBRACE HAIR ART COLOR CARE TIPS
*Disclaimer – These are just recommendations, please ensure bear in mind any allergies that you might have or any other health issue before choosing to adhere to any tips listed above. Again hope this helps a Curl out! ~Embrace the Natural You~ Genevieve Anyiah Licensed Cosmetologist + Embrace Hair Art Salon Owner Hey Curls,
I usually provide this to my clients that are debating if they want color or not but I will lay this out there for any Naturalista debating or deciding if she wants to color her natural tresses. Please know that color is a chemical process and I will try to explain it in as few words as possible in my own words. There is a science behind the coloring process and an understanding of the law of color (primary, secondary, tertiary colors, undertones, tones, etc.) There are various techniques as far as the application of color but what is important is that you understand how the color gets there. Color can be temporary, demi- or semi-permanent, or permanent. Color products contain little tiny grains of pigment that must enter the hair shaft in the case of permanent hair color. These molecules stay in the hair shaft. Temporary color products contain larger pigments of color that sit on the outside of the hair shaft and can be rinsed out after so many washes>>>i.e. temporary hair color such as hair shadows, sprays, etc. Semi-permanents last several washes or so and Demi-permanents fade. Even though I tried to put a years worth of knowledge in one paragraph, please know that there is a lot to the hair coloring process not even listed here. This is also why I recommend you always consult with a licensed professional when deciding on hair color because a lot of the hair colors at the stores are "one size fit all" and do not take into account what level or tone your hair color is or the underlying undertone. This is why you will see some folks walking around with green hair when they were trying to dye their hair blonde. Lastly when you go for that color, you need to begin a new regimen which includes a sulfate free color shampoo to retain your hair color. I will do another post on a regimen for colored natural hair. I'll also touch on bond rebuilding treatments such as Olaplex, etc. ...Below is what I provide my clients! IF ANY OF THE REASONS BELOW APPLY TO YOU THEN YOU MAY CONSIDER GETTING YOUR HAIR COLORED:
TECHNIQUES EMPLOYED BY STYLIST
TYPES OF COLOR: Temporary (Stains; Lasts 1-2 Shampoos)
Semi-Permanent (No Lift Deposit Only; Lasts 2-4 weeks)
Demi-Permanent (No Lift Deposit Only; Lasts 6-12 weeks)
Permanent (Lifts and Deposits)
*NOTE – We only offer semi-permanent, demi-permanent, and permanent colors. We recommend demi-permanents and permanents for gray hair coverage! Blonde colors involve lightening darker hair and then depositing color which will be a permanent color. WHAT NEXT?
WHAT CAN YOU DO:
Hope this helps a Curl out! Good luck on deciding whether or not it is something you may want to do. Genevieve Anyiah Licensed Cosmetologist + Embrace Hair Art Salon Owner ~Embrace the Natural You~ If you are in need of a blow dryer then here are some great options to use for your hair at home! Remember to always use a leave in and heat protectant prior to blow drying. (Check out Embrace Leave In Conditioners + the Velvet Smooth Heat Protectant) It's also best to pre-section your hair into 8-10 sections to blow dry. We are fans of blow dryer pik attachments over here as they are easy to maneuver with one hand versus using a denman brush and the blow dryer. We also prefer a blow dryer with a pik attachment over the blower dryer brushes which get really really hot. Hey Tresses,
Begin your mission now of getting edges growing, healthy, and stronger. Start doing the following as we have seen these methods work for ourselves and at the salon: 1) Use Jamaican black castor oil (JCBO) or try our Scalp + Growth Elixer nightly by massaging it into edges. JCBO, which contains physterols, a naturally occuring protein, also assists with hair dryness, hair growth by stimulating blood circulation, and can assist with a dry scalp. 2) Protect edges by finger coiling them with a heavy moisturizer cream as they grow back... 3) Style edges separately and wear hairstyles that cover new growth like lots of twist outs and two strand twists... 4) DO NO use edge control... 5) use more protein treatments and/or alternate using products with protein and without... 6) and trim edges seperately and periodcially to ensure you are removing damaged ends and not stunting growth... ~Embrace the Natural You~ Hi Tresses,
What the heck is pre-pooing you ask? It's a method of conditioning, deep conditioning or detangling before you shampoo. It is done overnight or some time, like 30 minutes to an hour, prior to shampooing! A hot oil treatment would fall in this category if you are wondering. This is where you apply oil to your ends and put on a heating cap and/or a cap and sit under the dryer. I like to pre-poo overnight, prior to wash day, with mostly something or anything with coconut oil because it is known to penetrate the hair shaft, open the cuticle and allow more nutrients to get to the cortex of the hair when used prior to washing. Try our Trinity Glaze to pre-poo overnight! Apply it to dry hair at night, concentrating mostly on the ends, detangle hair in sections, twist each section as it's completed (nothing fancy) and then baggy the hair with a shower cap or plastic shopping bag. Layer a silk scarf or T-shirt over the cap and go to bed and wash your hair the next morning! Baggying creates heat circulation especially if the product has moisture in it which further allows the product to do its thing in your hair! Some benefits to pre-pooing: *You don't have to detangle during the cleansing or conditioning process. *Allows you to retain more moisture throughout the cleansing process. *Hair is left super duper shiny! ~Embrace the Natural You~ Hi Tresses,
Deep Conditioners: Ideally natural hair should be deep conditioned 2x a month and more often if you are newly natural. Use your fingers or shower comb to distribute the product along your hair shaft and ends. Check out the Embrace the Natural You deep conditioners! Our leave in conditioners can be used as detanglers and deep conditioners. Feel free to alternate between products with and without protein for a moisture/elasticity balance. For instance, alternate your leave in conditioners, moisturizers, and other stylers that do and do no have protein. A deep conditioner should have:
Protein Treatments: This type of treatment is a must if you do a lot of protective styling or high manipulation styles such as twistouts, braidouts or wash and go styles. Proteins such as hydrolyzed wheat, keratin, silk, oat, and yeast bond to the hair and fill in gaps in the cuticle making hair stronger and less prone to breakage. Look for products with 1 or more of these items. ~Embrace the Natural You~ Hi Tresses,
