Healthy Hair Goals 2020 - It's not too late Sis!

5/27/2020

Hey Tresses,

If you haven't set a 2020 healthy hair goal as far as maintenance and length then do it now before June starts! Just ask yourself are you trying to retain 6 inches of length or what! Hair grows an average of half an inch a month! Yeah for real! So by the end of the year we should have around a good 3 inches!

Ahem (clears throat)...So let's get to that protective styling! Embrace the Natural You products are loaded with emollients like mango butter, aloe, kukui nut oil, extra virgin coconut oil, pumpkin seed oil, argan oil, humectants, and pumped with moisture! We got the products, but you have to do the work!

So put your goals on the fridge today with a super cool magnet!

Here are the Rules for setting your Healthy Hair Goals for 2020:
  • Choose a length you are working towards (i.e. mid back, 6 inches, etc.)
  • After every two weeks of loose hair then choose a protective style to rock for the next 4-6 weeks (i.e. Two strand twists, twist extensions, braid extensions, textured updo's, flat twist updos, etc.)
  • When rocking loose styles (i.e. twist outs, braid outs, flexi or perm rod sets, bantu knot outs, etc.), re-up the moisture on the 4th day with our Twist Truffle Whip or one of our Leave In's or at least 1x that week!
  • When rocking loose styles, wash hair every 7th day! Take a look at any of our Embrace Moisture Collection set if you need a regimen!
  • When wearing protective styles for longer than 2 weeks, clean your scalp! You can use witch hazel mixed with a little tea tree with cotton balls and get to cleaning your scalp! We have used the Embrace Condish Cowash Cleanser on the scalp as well with great results!
  • Do not leave extension styles in for longer than 6 weeks! That's an order! It's not good my friends! Don't care what anyone tells you!
  • Mist your protective styles with a little moisture every few days or weekly with our Tress Refresh Mist or your own water based mixture! You won't regret it!
  • Massage those edges when wearing extension styles on a nightly basis. Oh and massage that scalp every other day with the  Scalp + Growth Elixer OR the Trinity Glaze!
  • Wear a satin or silk bonnet or scarf every night OR sleep on a satin or silk pillow case. When hair rubs on cotton then it drys it out which causes shedding. If you didn't know this then what are you waiting for!
Got any questions? You can always email us at service@embracethenaturalyou.com. We are here for you!
Let's get to it!

Natural Hair Color Care: Post Color Regimen for Colored Natural Hair

5/3/2020

Picture
Hey Curls,

As promised, this is what I provide my clients after they receive natural hair color service. Another thing to think about not listed below is doing an Olaplex Treatment every 12 weeks or 3 months. This is not a protein treatment but a bond reconstructing treatment that rebuilds any broken bonds during the coloring process. Ask your stylist about this one. I make a point to do this through out the color process.
Please know that the purpose of altering your regimen with colored natural hair is to ensure the following:
  • preserve hair color and stop fading (note: hair color fades in the sun)
  • pack moisture back into the hair
  • soften the hair
  • brighten highlights
  • counteract brassiness or ashiness
  • enhance existing color

RECOMMENDED COLOR CARE FOR NATURAL HAIR BY EMBRACE HAIR ART
COLOR CARE TIPS
  • DO A DEEP CONDITION AND/OR PROTEIN TREATMENT BEFORE YOUR COLOR SERVICE (THESE ARE ADD ON SERVICES THAT CAN BE DONE IN THE SALON OR AT HOME)
  • GET REGULAR TRIMS (6-8 WEEKS) TO DECREASE SPLIT ENDS
  • STICK TO MINIMAL OR HEAT AVOIDANCE
  • MOISTURIZE DAILY WITH WATER/OIL/CONDITIONER IN SPRAY BOTTLE, A MOISTURIZING LEAVE IN CONDITIONER OR WATER BASED MOISTURIZER
  • USE SULFATE FREE CLEANSERS AND CONDITIONERS
  • BLONDE HAIR CARE (VIOLET SHAMPOOS LIKE BLONDE SEXY HAIR HELP ALLEVIATE BRASSINESS)
  • STICK TO A WEEKLY CLEANSING REGIMEN (SHAMPOO + CONDITION)
  • STICK TO LOW TENSION STYLES

*Disclaimer – These are just recommendations, please ensure bear in mind any allergies that you might have or any other health issue before choosing to adhere to any tips listed above.

Again hope this helps a Curl out!

Should You Color Your Natural Hair? All You Need to Know...

5/3/2020

Hey Curls,

I usually provide this to my clients that are debating if they want color or not but I will lay this out there for any Naturalista debating or deciding if she wants to color her natural tresses.

Please know that color is a chemical process and I will try to explain it in as few words as possible in my own words. There is a science behind the coloring process and an understanding of the law of color (primary, secondary, tertiary colors, undertones, tones, etc.)

There are various techniques as far as the application of color but what is important is that you understand how the color gets there. Color can be temporary, demi- or semi-permanent, or permanent. Color products contain little tiny grains of pigment that must enter the hair shaft in the case of permanent hair color. These molecules stay in the hair shaft. Temporary color products contain larger pigments of color that sit on the outside of the hair shaft and can be rinsed out after so many washes>>>i.e. temporary hair color such as hair shadows, sprays, etc. Semi-permanents last several washes or so and Demi-permanents fade.
Even though I tried to put a years worth of knowledge in one paragraph, please know that there is a lot to the hair coloring process not even listed here. This is also why I recommend you always consult with a licensed professional when deciding on hair color because a lot of the hair colors at the stores are "one size fit all" and do not take into account what level or tone your hair color is or the underlying undertone. This is why you will see some folks walking around with green hair when they were trying to dye their hair blonde.

Lastly when you go for that color, you need to begin a new regimen which includes a sulfate free color shampoo to retain your hair color. I will do another post on a regimen for colored natural hair. I'll also touch on bond rebuilding treatments such as Olaplex, etc.

...Below is what I provide my clients!

IF ANY OF THE REASONS BELOW APPLY TO YOU THEN YOU MAY CONSIDER GETTING YOUR HAIR COLORED:
  • Adds shine
  • Covers gray
  • Lightens or darkens natural color
  • Gives more depth
  • Provides more youthful appearance
  • Gives texture
  • Makes a bold statement
  • Enhances natural hair
  • Adds brightness
  • Disguises Identity

BELOW IS SOME INFORMATION THAT MAY HELP YOU WHEN DECIDING ON HAIR COLOR!

TECHNIQUES EMPLOYED BY STYLIST
  • VIRGIN COLOR or RETOUCH (A single color is applied all over)
  • HIGHLIGHTS (Creates natural looking multi-dimensional hair color and can be bold or subtle)
  • LOWLIGHTS (Involves coloring hair darker than its natural color)
  • BALAYAGE (Only the surface of the hair is painted by free-hand in abstract arrangement to enhance) - TYPES: OMBRE, COLOR MELT, SOMBRE, ETC.

TYPES OF COLOR:

Temporary (Stains; Lasts 1-2 Shampoos)
  • Masks gray hair
  • Subtly or richly enhances color
  • Darkens color
  • Doesn’t change natural color
  • Contains no peroxide
  • Washes out in 1 shampoo
  • Shows no root line

Semi-Permanent (No Lift Deposit Only; Lasts 2-4 weeks)
  • Blends or covers gray
  • Subtly enhances color
  • Darkens color
  • Doesn’t change natural color
  • Contains no peroxide
  • Washes out in about 12 shampoos
  • Shows no root line
  • NOT RECOMMENDED FOR SOMEONE WITH 50% MORE OF GRAY

Demi-Permanent (No Lift Deposit Only; Lasts 6-12 weeks)
  • Refreshes faded color
  • Helps with color corrections
  • Blends and covers gray
  • Introducing client to new color
  • Restoring natural hair color
  • Create change in tone of hair

Permanent  (Lifts and Deposits)
  • Covers gray 100%
  • Lightens hair
  • Darkens hair
  • Changes hair
  • Can achieve subtle or dramatic color changes
  • Contains peroxide
  • Doesn’t wash out
  • Root line shows

*NOTE – We only offer semi-permanent, demi-permanent, and permanent colors. We recommend demi-permanents and permanents for gray hair coverage! Blonde colors involve lightening darker hair and then depositing color which will be a permanent color.

WHAT NEXT?
  • WE WILL DETERMINE IF YOUR HAIR CAN BE COLORED
  • WE WILL EXAMINE YOUR HAIR AND DETERMINE ITS 1) DENSITY, 2) TEXTURE, 3) CURL PATTERN, 4) % OF GRAY, 5) NATURAL HAIR COLOR, 6) YOUR HAIR COLOR TONE (WARM, COOL, NUETRAL, ETC.), 5) POROSITY
  • WE WILL ALSO EXAMINE YOUR 1) SKIN TONE, 2) EYE COLOR, 3) FACE SHAPE, ETC
  • WE WILL FORMULATE A COLOR FOR YOU BASED ON THE VARIOUS FACTORS MENTIONED ABOVE!
  • WE WILL INFORM YOU OF THE COLOR CARE MAINTENANCE THAT YOU CAN PERFORM AT HOME!

WHAT CAN YOU DO:

  • BRING PICTURES OF STYLES WITH COLOR THAT YOU LIKE!
  • TELL US WHAT YOU LIKE: DO YOU LIKE VIBRANT, SUBTLE, OR NATURAL COLORS?
 ...
Hope this helps a Curl out! Good luck on deciding whether or not it is something you may want to do.

Need a Good Blow Dryer for Your Natural Hair at Home?

4/20/2020

If you are in need of a blow dryer then here are some great options to use for your hair at home! Remember to always use a leave in and heat protectant prior to blow drying. (Check out Embrace Leave In Conditioners + the Velvet Smooth Heat Protectant) It's also best to pre-section your hair into 8-10 sections to blow dry. We are fans of blow dryer pik attachments over here as they are easy to maneuver with one hand versus using a denman brush and the blow dryer. We also prefer a blow dryer with a pik attachment over the blower dryer brushes which get really really hot.

Need to Grow Back Your Natural Hair Edges

4/1/2020

Picture
Hey Tresses,

Begin your mission now of getting edges growing, healthy, and stronger.
Start doing the following as we have seen these methods work for ourselves and at the salon:
1) Use Jamaican black castor oil (JCBO) or try our Scalp + Growth Elixer nightly by massaging it into edges.  JCBO, which contains physterols, a naturally occuring protein,  also assists with hair dryness, hair growth by stimulating blood circulation,  and can assist with a dry scalp.
2) Protect edges by  finger coiling them with a heavy moisturizer cream as they grow back...
3) Style edges separately and wear hairstyles that cover new growth like lots of twist outs and two strand twists...
4) DO NO use edge control...
5) use more protein treatments and/or alternate using products  with protein and without...
6) and trim edges seperately and periodcially to ensure you are removing damaged ends and not stunting growth...

What is Pre-Pooing?

4/1/2020

Hi Tresses,

What the heck is pre-pooing you ask?

It's a method of conditioning, deep conditioning or detangling before you shampoo. It is done overnight or some time, like 30 minutes to an hour, prior to shampooing!

A hot oil treatment would fall in this category if you are wondering. This is where you apply oil to your ends and put on a heating cap and/or a cap and sit under the dryer.

I like to pre-poo overnight, prior to wash day, with mostly something or anything with coconut oil because it is known to penetrate the hair shaft, open the cuticle and allow more nutrients to get to the cortex of the hair when used prior to washing. Try our Trinity Glaze to pre-poo overnight!

Apply it to dry hair at night, concentrating mostly on the ends, detangle hair in sections, twist each section as it's completed (nothing fancy) and then baggy the hair with a shower cap or plastic shopping bag.

Layer a silk scarf or T-shirt over the cap and go to bed and wash your hair the next morning! Baggying creates heat circulation especially if the product has moisture in it which further allows the product to do its thing in your hair!

Some benefits to pre-pooing:
*You don't have to  detangle during the cleansing or conditioning process.
*Allows you to retain more moisture throughout the cleansing process.
*Hair is left super duper shiny!

Deep Conditioners + Protein Treatments

4/1/2020

Hi Tresses,

Deep Conditioners:

Ideally natural hair should be deep conditioned 2x a month and more often if you are newly natural. Use your fingers or  shower comb to distribute the product along your hair shaft and ends. Check out the Embrace the Natural You deep conditioners!  Our leave in conditioners can be used as detanglers and deep conditioners.

Feel free to alternate between products with and without protein for a moisture/elasticity balance. For instance, alternate your leave in conditioners, moisturizers, and other stylers that do and do no have protein.

A deep conditioner should have:
  • contain butters and oils
  • have slip for easy detangling
  • provide moisture
  • add body
  • hydrate the hair
  • improve elasticity
  • contain conditioning agents
  • and seal in moisture
  • may contain protein

Protein Treatments:

This type of treatment is a must if you do a lot of protective styling or high manipulation styles such as twistouts, braidouts or wash and go styles.  Proteins such as hydrolyzed wheat, keratin, silk, oat, and yeast bond to the hair and fill in gaps in the cuticle making hair stronger and less prone to breakage. Look for products with 1 or more of these items.

BUILD A NATURAL HAIR WASH DAY REGIMEN!

4/1/2020

Hi Tresses,

Please take care of your hair during this 2020 pandemic (COVID-19 - blah), as almost all salon have been closed due a nationwide lockdown!  Try sticking to a regimen whether it’s weekly, bi-weekly or long term (4-8 weeks). Below is a sample regimen. As far as products, at the salon, we exclusively use Embrace the Natural You products which celebrated their 5 year anniversary this year! We do use other brands for 1) clarifying hair with a lot of build up, 2) hold (i.e. gels, mousses, etc.) and 3) color. You can shop our products via www.embracethenaturalyou.com. We have always used our own cleansers, leave in conditioners, butters, moisturizers, oils, heat protectants, and more! We also have satin reversible bonnets as well. Come shop with our over 5000+ customers.

Weekly / Bi-Weekly
  • Clean - Use a sulfate free cleanser. Massage the scalp 1st and they scrub away. 1-2x. Rinse well.
  • Detangle / Condition - Use a leave in conditioner that is watered down to detangle. Usually 6-8 section is good.
  • OR Deep Condition - Use a rich creamy DC and alternate with and without protein weekly for 5-30 mins and rinse!
  • Leave In Conditioner -  The finer the hair then the less product you you use. Apply to damp hair!
  • Blow Dry (Optional) - If your hair is a beast then this may be a good option prior to styling but use a heat protectant over the leave in before blow drying by section.
  • Styler - Try a Gel/Mousse (hold), Butter (soften),  or Moisturizer (moisturize) AND/OR different combos.
  • Go To Styles: Wash and Go, Two Strand Twists, Flat Twists, Cornrows (6-10), Loose Braids

Long Term (4 weeks to 8 weeks)
  • Remove Shed Hair/Detangle - Wet the hair completely (without adding product as water will reactivate whats in there already), use a wide tooth comb and remove the shed hair. Start with 8-12 sections.
  • Deep Clean - Use a sulfate free cleanser. Massage the scalp 1st and they scrub away. 1-2x. Rinse well.
  • Deep Condition - Use a rich creamy DC and alternate with and without protein weekly for 5-30 mins and rinse!
  • Leave In Conditioner -  The finer the hair then the less product you you use. Apply to damp hair!
  • Blow Dry (Optional) - If your hair is a beast then this may be a good option prior to styling but use a heat protectant over the leave in before blow drying by section.  You could also alternatively put hair in braids allowing it to air dry before moving on to your protective style.
  • Styler - Butter (soften),  or Moisturizer (moisturize) AND/OR together.
  • Go To Styles: Crochet, Extension Styles (Braids, Twists, Faux Locs)

In Between Care + More Tips:
  • Use a butter or moisturizer to soften, moisturize and style and/or a mist to hydrate twists/braids.
  • For those with super dry scalp then feel free to use an oil on the scalp but massage it please. 😊
  • Wrap your hair at night with a silk scarf or bonnet or use a satin/silk pillow case.
  • Alternate between long term styles and some of the styles done weekly/bi-weekly.
